About Romania

History

Romania is Europe's lesser, known corners with a rich and fascinating history. The name "Romania" comes from the Latin word "Romanus" which means “citizen of the Roman Empire.” Romania is influenced by its neighbors but managed to retain its traditions while incorporating new cultural elements to evolve. History of the human race is believed that some of the first Homo Sapiens migrated to this European land. Evidence found in the caves near the Danube River Suggests that the oldest humans came here to settle and mix with the Neanderthals. At the beginning of the Neolithic period, Romanian territory was inhabited by people who migrated from distant lands. In the early 1990s, it had started taking its first steps toward entering European Union, but it took 17 years before it could officially become a member.

 

Geographical Location

Romania lies closely against the countries of Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Moldova, and Ukraine sharing five different borders. As a matter of fact, to the east of it, its got the Black Sea, which approximately has about 225 kilometers of shoreline. It ranks IN 22nd of all countries in the world when it comes to the shoreline. Romania got about 238,391 square kilometers of land within it. It is also a country that does not have any land outside of its initial borders what it has in Europe and where its located. This also makes Romania the 81st largest country in the world. However, it is classified as the largest in southern-eastern Europe but the 12th largest in all of Europe.

 

Ethnic and Culture

The major ethnic group is obviously Romanians. Also, it has some minor ethnic backgrounds such as Hungarian, Roma, Ukrainian, German, Albanian, Russian, Turkish, Serbian, Slovak, Arab, and African.

Romania is a member of the Francophonie, an organization of governments that use French as their primary language or have a special affiliation with the French language or culture. On March 1 Romanians celebrate the beginning of spring in their own, unique way. To show their friendship, respect, or admiration, men and boys offer to their (female) family members, friends, and colleagues a "Martisor" (small trinket attached to a red/ white lace - red for love and white for honesty). The tradition is said to have originated in Roman times.

 

Language and Religion

Over 90% of people have reported speaking Romanian, which Is fascinating because Romanian is a very old language. As a matter of fact, they say it's over seventeen hundred years old. 81% of the country of people identify as Christian more so Orthodox Christianity. Also have protected and of course Catholics and other people who identify as other religions, maybe even Islamic. 

 

People and Population

The current population of Romania in 2022 is 19,659,267, a 1.71% increase from 2021. there was a decreasing rate of population between 2019- 2021. This country is the 59th largest in the world according to population.

Hollywood's original Tarzan was born in Freidorf - a suburb of the city of Timisoara, Romania. Considered by movie-makers "the only man in Hollywood who's natural in the flesh and can act without clothes", Johnny Weissmuller (1904-1984) was a box-office hit in the 1932 'Tarzan the Ape Man. Freidorf maintains beautiful Secession-style architecture and lots of green spaces.

Romanian prince and military leader Vlad Draculea or Vlad Dracul nicknamed Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) was the inspiration for Count Dracula.
Vlad Tepes fought bravely against the invading Turkish army in the mid-1400s; he used his military skills and psychological warfare to keep the Ottomans at bay.

 

Economy

The most important sectors of Romania’s economy in 2020 were industry (21.7%), wholesale and retail trade, transport, accommodation, and food services (19.7%), and public administration, defense, education, human health, and social work activities (16.5%). Intra-EU trade accounts for 74% of Romania’s exports (Germany 23%, Italy 11%, and France 7%), while outside the EU 3% go to Turkey and the United Kingdom.

In terms of imports, 74% come from EU Member States (Germany 21%, Italy 9%, and Hungary 7%), while outside the EU 6% come from China and 4% from Turkey.
